Personality Profiling… What is it?

At any stage in your career, it’s useful to take a look at your personality and how others may see you – and more importantly, how you see yourself. This isn’t the old “strengths weaknesses” blurb, this is something far more insightful. This is where DISC Profiling can come in very useful.

What is it?

A DISC personality profile test is a method whereby one’s behaviour is aggregated into four main areas: Dominance, Influence, Steadiness and Compliance.

This test is designed to see how much each of these four elements represent your personality. Whether your an aspiring leader or contemplating a job or career change, the insight provided will be an invaluable tool.

Armed with this information, it will provide you with greater insight into how you “tick” as a person. This will help you to see which areas of work you may excel in and which areas you may not.

How Does it Work?

The DISC profile test is made up of multiple choice questions roughly 20-30 sets of four or five statements. Select the statement which you feel describes you best. There is no right or wrong answer, simply be honest about yourself. Try not to over-think or dwell on each question.

There will be one (or more) statement(s) which you fit best and one (or more) which is (are) least like you. Here’s an example of one of the statements:

Where Can I Find a DISC test?

There are literally thousands of examples of these online. Many of them are free and if you want to download the results and the full analysis, then this will cost typically, anything from between €5 and €20.

The one I usually use use can be found here. They charged €15 for the complete downloadable report and analysis.

Now What?

What’s important to remember with these things is that the results are totally subjective. They need to be used in conjunction with a number of caveats, such as one’s life situation, work situation etc. Many factors can affect the answers provided. That said, more often than not, people recognise themselves in the outcome.

From the coaching perspective, my job is to be your thinking partner. To help you to use the results to join the dots. Among other things:

  • How do the results compare with your own view of yourself?
  • What surprised you about the results?
  • What didn’t surprise you?
  • How can you use the results in your current work or life situation?

After reflection and some thought you’ll discover what resonates and what doesn’t. It’ll assist you in finding a suitable way to reach your chosen goal. Or help you to define some goals going forward.

If you decide to make your profile. Let’s have a free, no obligation discovery call to discuss the results.

Until next time,
