Coaching – Life, Career or Business?

Good evening, afternoon or morning wherever you are. Welcome to the latest from the My Coach Ben blog. It’s been a hectic few weeks, hence the belated update. These are exciting times. Networking events, new clients and continuing progress from the existing ones.

This year’s progress has continued. In some cases better than I could have expected. One volunteer is now moving from the overall Life Coaching to more of a business focus. This brings me on to a question many people ask: what’s the difference between Life Coaching and Business Coaching. The answer is pretty logical. No Life, no Business.

First life, then business and career. If anyone is thinking of taking a business coaching program, I’d highly recommend they do it after a life coaching program. Often business coaching will focus on the person. The reason is simple.

You see, in our career and business endeavours, it’s ourselves we offer before any product. In fact, YOU are the product. Many financiers will tell you, they receive more business plans in a day than they care to count. What matters though isn’t so much the idea but the person behind it.

  • Is she/he Authentic?
  • Is he/she Honest?
  • Does her/his product or idea Align with her/him as a person?
  • Has he/she found their Purpose in life?
  • Are they Passionate about their work?

These are just five questions but as I’m sure you can imagine, there are many, many more.

The volunteer that has moved onto business coaching is directly linking the results of his life coaching program to his business endeavours. In this way, he is bringing us true self to his work. All aspects of his learning for life are focusing on one element to ensure he is working with total authenticity.

Have you ever had a colleague or boss that you simply couldn’t connect with? That failed to convince you of his/ her ideas? Someone, that you just don’t feel the trust with? Usually, in my opinion, this is because this person is not authentic. They put the management persona before their real character.

Thus, the business or career must be built on firm foundations. The foundations will stand the test of time. The harsh winters, the hot summers and the unpredictability of the changing seasons through autumn and spring.

Summary

During a Life Coaching program, the goal is to find your true character. Your true self. Armed with this insight, one can bring authenticity to business endeavours. Communication is easier because it is genuine. Challenges can be faced head-on and confidently. Colleagues and counterparts will trust you.

Life Coaching crosses all parts of the person. Business Coaching brings all of that together so that your strengths are channelled into a specific area.

Ultimately, businesses are run, and careers are pursued, by people. This is the starting point for any venture. It’s my belief that the most important element of any business is the service to the customer, the colleague and to people in general. This my friend, is the most successful business model there is.

An effective life leads to an effective career and an effective business.

Until next time.
