The Penny Drops!

I can’t believe it’s been almost a month since I last posted an update. What with unpacking packings and unblocking blockages at home, new events in the day job, the time has passed by. Same goes for the coaching program which continues to challenge the clients and evoke “Aha” moments. Some expected and some completely out of the blue.

The clients continue to be Open, Available and Appreciative. Three very important things for those in my position and no less so for those being coached. So again, thank you to the current crop of volunteers. With this, new insights arrive during each session, which helps the correction of negativity, and the onset of growth.

Growth, as obvious as this may sound is something that takes time. The longer a seed is watered and left to grow, the stronger the roots become. This applies to both good and the bad “seeds”. In the same way, in order to improve one’s current outlook and perspective, time needs to be taken to absorb the current and implement change over time. Rome – as they say – wasn’t built in a day, and this is true for all aspects of our lives.

I, like all of my fellow humans, am not perfect. Far from it. But I am mindful of the things in my life which need to improve in order to fulfil it concretely and to become the best version of me that I can be. Just as my clients need to challenge the negative and cultivate the positive. Both of which lend themselves to our own internal workings. Our own beliefs.

Mistaken Beliefs.

One of the topics we’ve covered recently is that of mistaken beliefs. We all tell ourselves positive and negative things. On occasion, some of the negatives outweigh the positives. These negatives are rarely if ever, the reality, but only insofar as we tell ourselves. This, in turn, plays out in how we come across to others and consequently, how others relate to and treat us.

For example, one client described themselves as “lazy”. The Oxford Dictionary of English describes Lazy as unwilling to work or use energy. Now when you consider that this person has moved to a foreign country, learnt a new language, plays sport regularly and has worked on projects which are renowned the world over – these are hardly the actions of someone you would describe as lazy.

It is only when the client is told this very person is none other than themselves, the penny drops! You see, we all have periods perhaps on a particular day or over a few days when we don’t feel like doing anything in particular. We want to kick back, relax and chill. Watch Netflix. Listen to music. Play a video game. That is not laziness.

This is relaxing… taking a break. Ultimately, it’s a matter of perspective and truth. The person who has not done any of the above (language, sport, projects etc.) could perhaps be described as lazy, but even this may not always be the case. When we stop to reflect on what we have achieved in life, we are always surprised. It is important to celebrate successes in life – as well as failures. This, after all, is what we all strive for in one way or another. Success.

The point is: be careful what you tell yourself. For the negative that we tell ourselves we are, can become beliefs if left to grow. This in itself becomes an issue because, in essence, belief is not the same as truth.

Until next time,

Your Coach Ben.
